The mystery surrounding the arrest of a suspected agent of Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) from a Mazagaon flat on Thursday deepens.
Three days after the Crime Branch ostensibly arrested alleged ISI agent Javed Abdul Gafoor Mojawala, 28, from his Mazagaon flat, senior police officers continue to maintain a stoic silence on the issue.
They are not even ready to confirm or deny the arrest.
On Thursday, the Crime Branch had called for a press conference to announce “a big detection”, but cancelled it at the eleventh hour. Joint commissioner of police, crime, Himanshu Roy later said the conference was cancelled on account of the “developing nature of the investigation”.
He, however, did not clarify which [case] he was referring to.
When the Hindustan Times asked Mumbai commissioner of police, Sanjeev Dayal, for a confirmation on the arrest on Saturday, he said he cannot make any statement in view of the ongoing winter session of the state legislature.
“We [the police] cannot make any statement because it will amount to contempt of the House. Only the government can make any statement on the floor of the House,” Dayal said.
When pointed out that if the police could call for press conferences and issue statements about other sensitive cases, such as the location of an unsecured wi fi network in Navi Mumbai that had been used by suspected Indian Mujahideen operatives to send an email to media houses following the blast at Varanasi on Tuesday when the legislative assembly was still in session, Dayal replied: “Those are different from this.”
