Jeweller arrested for stealing gold worth Rs 52 lakh

A jeweller from Ghatkopar who was on the run for more than three weeks with gold jewellery worth Rs 52 lakh was arrested from Ahmedabad on Friday.

The police have recovered stolen jewellery worth Rs 26 lakh that was returned to 50 out of the 96 people who had pawned the same with the accused, Parasmal Kumawat, 32. Kumawat allegedly told the police that he had suffered losses in business and could not return the jewellery pawned with him because of which he fled.

"We arrested Kumawat, who owns Mansi jewellers at Ramabai Ambedkar Nagar area, from Ahmedabad on Friday. Kumawat had gone missing from his jewellery store in the first week of August along with 2kg gold," said police inspector Jitendra Agarkar from Pant Nagar police station.

The incident came to light when a few customers, who had pawned jewellery with Kumawat, found his store closed in the first week of August. The customers had come to pay money and get their jewellery back. Initially, they thought Kumawat might have gone to his native place. However, when Kumawat's cell phone remained unreachable, 15 customers approached the Pant Nagar police.

When the police went to Kumawat's residence, they found that it had been sold a few days ago. Following this, the police registered a case of cheating against him. A team from Pant Nagar police later went to Kumawat's native place in Rajasthan, however in vain.
