Khalsa college releases coffee table book for platinum jubilee

They bowled, they kicked, they cycled their way to sporting glory, and now they will populate the pages of a coffee table book on their alma mater: Khalsa College. Sporting stars such as Balwinder Singh Sandhu (cricket), Jude Menezes (hockey), Mary Leela Rao (athletics) all studied at the Matunga college, which was established in 1937, and is in the midst of its platinum jubilee celebrations.

The book, which will be released on December 22, also includes chapters on the college’s history, its research institute and a wealth of photos culled from college magazines over the years.

“Hockey has been our strength,” said Ajit Kumar, head of the cultural department and a lecturer at the college who is coordinating the celebrations. “As a college well known for its sports, we decided to dedicate on chapter to the athletes from our college.”

As part of the celebrations, which will officially begin on November 28 and last through next month, former teachers will be felicitated, alumni will perform as part of a musical evening and former vice-chancellors of the university will participate in events.

“Our college was the first to be established in Mumbai by a private management,” said Ajit Singh, director of the college. “A lot of things are happening as part of our celebrations and a lot more will happen over the next few months.”
