Kidnapped 6-yr-old rescued from UP

Five persons have been arrested in the case. Four of the accused have been identified as Sohanlal Gupta, Sameer Khan, Sandeep Barose and Sujit Bind. Bind’s brother too was arrested, but his name had been withheld, the police said.

Gupta is the proprietor of several cake shops in the city and also owns a cake factory, the police said.

While Khan and Barose were employed by Gupta as delivery boys, Bind used to work as his driver.

“Khan, Barose and Bind lured the child with sweets and took him to Nashik by road. From Nashik, Barose proceeded to Varanasi by train along with Bind,” police commissioner Arup Patnaik said.

Barose and Bind then took Karnit to Handya in Allahabad, where he was kept in a shanty. Karnit’s father had used social networking site Facebook to trace his son back.

Two days ago, Karnit’s family received a call demanding a ransom of Rs1 crore. More calls were made and the ransom was finalised at R10 lakh, the police said. The calls originated from Nashik, one from a landline and the other from a mobile phone.

“Bind, who was with Karnit, had learnt about the arrest of his accomplices and had decided to kill the boy. But our team managed to rescue Karnit and bring him back to the city safely,” Patnaik said. “The family is lucky to get their son back.”
