"We are going to file a police complaint on Thursday. We think that the hospital staff made a mistake because of which Yasmin died. Yasmin's husband, Ejaz is not interested in filing a complaint," said Yasmin's younger sister, Kulsum Ibrahim.

Shaikh, who was suffering from pleural effusion where excess fluid accumulates around the lungs, had gone to Sion Hospital for a routine diagnostic test, Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) procedure. On Tuesday, after a senior resident doctor carried out the FNA procedure on Shaikh she collapsed and was declared dead soon after. The hospital sent the body for a post-mortem and the report is awaited pending the histopathological examination of the heart and chemical analysis of the skin.

Independent doctors said that FNA, which is a simple diagnostic procedure, was unlikely to have caused the death. "It can't be an error of procedure," said Dr Nagraj Huilgol, senior radiation oncologist, Nanavati Hospital.
