Parts of south central Mumbai and the Ghatkopar-Kurla area will also face 50% water cut while Goregaon-Dahisar area will face 10% water cut for three days.

The reason for this is that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) are going to fix a butterfly valve on the 2,500 mm Bhandup-Maroshi main line as part of the Maroshi-Vakola-Mahim-Matunga tunnel project on Monday. Therefore, the line will have to be isolated for 72 hours.

“This will be an inconvenience to people but we request them to preserve water during these three days. We are doing this so that people get better service in the future,” said Vinay Deshpande, BMC hydraulic engineer.

The water tunnel project, from Marol Maroshi, Mahim to Ruparel College in Matunga, 60 m below ground level, will replace the old mains.

These tunnels will be maintenance-free for around 15 years and will facilitate uninterrupted water supply to the city with better pressure.

“These tunnels cannot be punctured. This will help reduce water leakages and thefts,” said a senior official from the civic water department, on condition of anonymity, because he is not authorised to talk to the media.
