Police sub inspector Munir Sheikh, who had gone into hiding after he was booked in a case of abetment to suicide, surrendered before the crime branch on Thursday. He has been remanded to police custody till April 11 by a metropolitan magistrate’s court.
Senior inspector Raghunath Dalvi of unit 11 of the crime branch told HT that Sheikh surrendered before them in the morning and was subsequently produced in the court. The Bombay high court had rejected Sheikh anticipatory bail plea on April 1 and given him 10 days to either surrender before the police or move the Supreme Court.
On December 21, Sheikh had allegedly picked up Kunda Shinde, a resident of Madh Island after one of her neighbours complained that she had stolen some of her valuables. Without lodging an FIR or investigating the matter, Sheikh brought Shinde to Malwani police station. Shinde tried to hang herself in the toilet of the police station next morning. She was rushed to the hospital, but she died on December 31.
Following Shinde’s death, a case of abetment of suicide (under Section 306 of the Indian Penal Code) was registered against Sheikh. Sheikh had also been booked for keeping Shinde in illegal confinement, but he had procured bail in this matter.
