Man dies after being hit by vegetable vendor

Around 60 to 70 people gathered outside the police station on Sunday demanding that the police take action against the two accused.

The police said the incident took place around 8.30 pm at the vegetable market in Kranti Nagar, Kandivli (East), when Surendra Sonkamble (20) went to the market with his friend Salim Sayed (20).

The duo – students of a Malad-based college – approached Hazare asking him about the price of vegetables and Sonkamble reportedly picked up a cucumber and bit into it to check how fresh it was.

This agitated Hazare, who got into an argument with the two youngsters. During the course of the argument, Hazare slapped Sonkamble hard below his ear, which is believed to have caused grievous internal injury, and Sonkamble collapsed.

Sonkamble was rushed to Bhagwati Hospital in Borivli, but he died before he was admitted.

“Sonkamble’s friend Sayed registered a case against the duo. Hazare and his brother are absconding,” said Madhukar Yadav, police sub-inspector and investigating officer from Kurar police station.

“There seems to be no previous enmity between Hazare and Sonkamble. We don’t know where the duo stays and are trying to locate them.
