An unemployed youth resorted to illegal means to buy a gift for his sister, but the police foiled his robbery bid and arrested him on August 16.
Former call centre employee Sanjay alias Ravi Shankar Chettiar, 23, had no money to buy a gift for his sister on rakshabandhan. According to the police, a resident of Charkop in Kandivli (West), Chettiar is a commerce graduate and was working with a call centre till recently but unsatisfied with his pay, he left his job and had been unemployed since then.
On August 13, Chettiar visited his sister in Chennai. He came back and armed with a toy gun and a chopper went to rob a jewellery shop in Bharat Nagar area of the Bandra-Kurla Complex on August 16.
He threatened the owner of Sonal Jewellers with a toy gun and a chopper, asking him to hand over gold and silver jewelleries. His attempt was foiled as the owner of the jewellery store, Lalchand Sharma, 42, raised an alarm, following which local rushed to the spot and surrounded Chettiar. Hearing the commotion, a beat marshal came in to inspect and found that Chettiar was armed.
“A local, Nasir Abu Bakr, 45, managed to grab Chettiar, following which the policemen overpowered him,” said Vinayak Saude, senior police inspector of BKC police station.
During the course of investigation, Chettiar also confessed his role in another robbery. He told the police that after he quit his job, his neighbour Santosh Nepali along with his accomplices — Ashok and Jagira — had persuaded him to join their gang. In March, four of them entered a Borivli-based estate agent’s office and made away with more than Rs10 lakh.
