The Crime Branch has arrested a 21-year-old accountant for sending a threat emails to film scriptwriter and lyricist Javed Akhtar over his remarks made during a news channel discussion on a fatwa that prohibits women from working in offices in proximity with men.

Akhtar had criticised the fatwa, which also decreed that the acceptance of a woman’s earnings by a family was against the Sharia. On May 15, Akhtar had met senior police officers and had informed them of the emails.

Police said Anees-ul-islam Abdul Kalam, who is employed with Asia Hospitalities Services, had allegedly sent the threat mails from 'aneesul@gmail.com' that turned out to be his personal email address.

Himanshu Roy, joint commissioner of police (crime) said they established the IP address from which the mails were sent. “The team got the address of the cyber café from which the mail had been sent,” Roy.

Nandkishore More of the Cyber Crime Cell (Bandra unit) said the accused was arrested from CST on July 19 following a tip-off. The police said that a team went to New Delhi to arrest Anees but could not find him. They looked for him at many cities, including Delhi and Kanpur and his hometown Jalaun in Uttar Pradesh.
