Mayor asks Chavan for Rs 1,501 cr that state govt owes civic body

“The state government and its agencies owe the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) more than Rs 1,500 crore in property tax, water bills and other services provided by us and the chief minister should expedite the process of clearing the outstanding amounts,” Jadhav said.

Apart from the outstanding taxes, the delay in disbursing funds for the Brimstowad project that was started post the 2005 deluge with the aim of augmenting the city’s drainage system was also discussed.

The central government had promised to completely fund the project that, in 2007, was estimated to cost Rs 1,200, of which the civic body has received Rs 1,000 crore so far.

Jadhav requested Chavan to speak to the central government so that the remaining Rs 200 crore could be released. Chavan agreed to talk to
the central government so that funds can be made available to us at the earliest, Jadhav said.
