Metro, monorail sites to be barricaded: MMRDA

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is presently handling three road stretches where it has undertaken infrastructure work. The three stretches are:

* The 12 km stretch from Versova to Ghatkopar on which the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar Metro is being constructed

* The 15 km stretch from Museum till Ghatkopar on which the Eastern Freeway is being constructed, and

* The 20 km stretch on G D Ambekar and RC Marg (Chembur-Wadala), on which the monorail is being constructed.

The MMRDA set a deadline of June 2 for the removal of all debris on its sites which cause water-logging and hindrance to traffic flow. All the construction sites will be barricaded, while all the pits and excavated areas will be protected to prevent accidents, according to officials. Besides, water pumps will be deployed at all sites to prevent water-logging, they said.

“The MMRDA, at this moment, is only handling 2 per cent of the city’s entire road network. However we have taken adequate measures to ensure that no accidents occur at these sites,” said Rahul Asthana, metropolitan commissioner.

The Maharashra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), which maintains 29 flyovers in the city, has also assured that it is ready for the monsoons. “We have completed our pre-monsoon repair work. I am sure commuters will not face potholes and other difficulties on flyovers operated by us,” said AV Deodhar, chief engineer, MSRDC.
