Minor found murdered: Cops suspect friends’ involvement

The police have picked up two youngsters for the alleged rape and murder of a 12-year-old girl in Bainganwadi, on Sunday. The police suspect the duo was friends with the minor.

The officials added a few other people allegedly known to the girl were also interrogated and they were close to a breakthrough. According to sources, the girl was friends with a group of boys, all between 18 to 22 years.

While senior police officials had ruled out the possibility of the girl being sexually assaulted by more than one person, doctors at Rajawadi Hospital, who conducted the post-mortem, do not rule this possibility.

Sources at the hospital said she sustained head and injuries and suffered contusions on her body. Doctors also confirmed she died of asphyxia with evidence of sexual assault. To confirm whether she was assaulted by multiple persons, doctors have preserved her vaginal and anal swabs.

“Looking at the injuries, it appears that multiple persons assaulted the child. We need to ascertain this by conducting a DNA test,” said a doctor, requesting anonymity. “Of the two boys we are presently interrogating, one is the prime suspect.
We are awaiting the DNA test report before drawing conclusions,” said a high-ranking police officer, requesting anonymity.
Govandi residents, meanwhile, protested in front of the police station on Monday, demanding arrests of the accused and keeping a tab on the drug addicts frequenting the area.
