Minor held for smuggling Rs 72 lakh at city airport

Customs officials on Thursday held a 17-year-old professional smuggler with Rs 72 lakh in Indian currency and 3kg iridium powder, a gold adulterating agent, worth Rs 60 lakh while he was trying to transport them from Hong Kong to Dubai with a stopover in Mumbai.

Customs officials on Thursday held a 17-year-old professional smuggler with Rs 72 lakh in Indian currency and 3kg iridium powder, a gold adulterating agent, worth Rs 60 lakh while he was trying to transport them from Hong Kong to Dubai with a stopover in Mumbai.

His father, Mohammad Rangrez, 45, a hawala agent from Ahmedabad, who was waiting in Dubai, was also arrested when he arrived at the airport to look for his son. The duo was later released on bail after the consignment was seized and statements recorded.
