Minority cut-offs drop slightly, other lists might follow suit

With fewer SSC students scoring above 90% this year, cut-offs on general merit lists may dip too.

Cut-offs in the offline lists of three well-known city colleges dipped when the lists were released on Tuesday, indicating that general merit lists cut-offs could also fall.

Colleges have to release their lists for in-house (schools with an affiliated junior college), minority and management quota seats before the online admission is finalised.

At St Andrew’s College, Bandra, the cut-off for science fell from 83.27% last year to 82.73% this year. For the science-bifocal (computer science) stream it dipped from 90.18% to 88.36% and for commerce from 80.91% to 80%. The college has a quota for Christian students.

At Sathaye College, which admits students from Parle Tilak Vidyalaya, the science cut-off (in-house) fell from 82.55% to 79.3% and for commerce from 71.09% to 70.2%. At SIES College in Sion (which has a quota for South Indian language speakers), the cut-off for science (general) fell from 89% last year to 87.5% this year, while the cut-offs for the three science-bifocal (vocational) streams fell by around 1%.

“This year, the marks have come down, students scoring above 90% are fewer,” said Kavita Rege, principal of Sathaye College in Vile Parle. “It is hard to say, but perhaps the general list cut-offs could also fall.”

Once the offline admissions are completed, colleges will surrender remaining seats to the education department and these will then be released through the online process. There are around 1.15 lakh seats available offline including through minority, management and in-house quotas. Around 1.49 lakh seats are available online.
