“A religious flag was found in an inappropriate condition. This was spotted by a group of Muslims and led to minor incidents of violence,” said Additional Commissioner of Police (Central), Sadanand Date.
Following the incident, sporadic instances of violence were reported in and around Mahim. “Bikes and cars were damaged on Mori Road. The group pelted stones at restaurants and bars forcing people to vacate,” said an eyewitness.
People sleeping on the footpath were also evacuated and the area was cordoned off for a few minutes. Traffic was diverted for some time.
Date said a first information report had been lodged against unidentified miscreants “for deliberate and malicious acts intending to outrage religious feelings”.
Forty Government Railway Police personnel have been deployed at Mahim station as a precautionary measure.
Date said that a large number of policemen have been deployed on the spot.
