More than half of TYBSc students miss practical exams

Third year Bachelor of Science practical exams were disrupted for the second consecutive day on Tuesday because of the on-going teachers’ strike. Nearly half the students who were supposed to appear for the exams were unable to do so with several city colleges cancelling the practical tests.

Of the 1,830 students, who were scheduled to appear for exams on Tuesday, only 960 could give their exams. Only 33 out of 74 centres could successfully conduct exams, worse than Monday when 40 out of 70 centres conducted the exams.

Practical exams were cancelled in several well-known colleges including Sathaye College, Rizvi College, Kirti College, Khalsa College and Jai Hind College. “The situation was not good,” admitted DG Wasave, controller of exams, Mumbai University.

Despite trouble at several colleges on Monday, the Mumbai University had decided to proceed with Tuesday’s practical exams for Zoology, Microbiology, Botany, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Computer Science and Biochemistry. The University maintained its stand on Tuesday, too. “Those centers that did not conduct their practical examination today [Tuesday], for them a re-examination schedule will be announced very soon by the university,” said a note from the university. The university has also issued a circular to all college principals asking them to give a list of teachers who refused to discharge their duties. The schedule will be unchanged. “Everything is on schedule, there is no postponement,” said Naresh Chandra, pro vice chancellor of the university.

Teachers claimed that external examiners did not even show up in some colleges. “The boycott is proceeding as scheduled, but it is inconveniencing students in the process,” said Madhu Paranjape, general secretary of the Bombay University and College Teachers’ Union.
