MU server crash hits registration for degree courses

Thousands of students seeking admissions to degree courses could not complete the registration process, which was scheduled to start today, as the University of Mumbai’s (MU) portal for registration crashed on Tuesday morning.

The university was to open its registration portal, mum.net.in, at 10am this morning, but instead opened it on Monday night. A few thousand students managed to register before the server crashed, with more students trying to access it.

Nauman Sakharkar, a student from Kurla, was trying to access the website since 10.30 am, but was unable to do so till afternoon. “The webpage didn’t open properly. It got stuck whenever I tried to apply for registration,” he said.

Students are required to register online before submitting the filled forms at colleges affiliated to the MU. The registration process will continue till June 21.

Till last year, the online registration process was handled by the Maharashtra Knowledge Corporation Limited (MKCL). This year, the university outsourced the process to a private company selected through a competitive bidding process. There are around 4.5 lakh seats for degree courses in 740 colleges affiliated to the university. Last year, the number of applications was 9.17 lakh.
