MUMBAI: In a move aimed at making the examination system more transparent, the University of Mumbai (MU) will now set the question papers of all the three years’ examinations for undergraduate courses across affiliated colleges. The decision was taken by the university’s academic council at a meeting on Monday.

Explaining the rationale behind the decision, Anil Patil, director, Board of College and University Development ( BCUD), said, “We want to bring uniformity in the question papers and the scheduling of exams. Besides, there were complaints that some teachers don’t teach the entire syllabus and then papers are set on the basis of only what was taught in the classroom, not the entire syllabus.”

The varsity is also planning to drop the internal assessment component in examinations from the BA, BCom and BSc courses. “The aim of internal evaluation is to ensure continuous assessment of students. However, in a class of 120 students, it wasn’t possible for teachers to regularly interact and assess students. Many colleges weren’t sending the internal marks on time, delaying the declaration of results,” said Patil.

Presently, the semester examinations during first and second year of undergraduate courses are held at the college level, with the individual colleges setting their own question papers, assessing answer sheets and allotting marks to the students. From next academic year, the varsity will set a common paper for all the colleges, while the assessment and marking will be done at the college level. The final year examinations will continue to be held at the varsity level.
