The motive is yet to be ascertained, the police said.

Dipti Chauhan, 34, used to live with her husband Nilesh, 38 and son Siddhesh, 6, in Alakhnanda Society in Rawalpada, Dahisar (East). While Dipti was a housewife, Nilesh is a stockbroker and their son was studying in Class 2 at Thakur School.

The police have arrested Nilesh, her brother-in-law, Bharat, his wife Sarla and father-in-law Kantilal, said additional commissioner of police (north region) Ramrao Pawar.

They have been charged with abetment of suicide after Dipti's parents filed a complaint.

According to the police, the incident took place around 12.15pm. Dipti took the terrace keys from the unsuspecting watchman and took her son there. Residents said Siddhesh had taken his toys with him and after 10 minutes on the terrace, Dipti covered his eyes with a piece of cloth and tossed him off the terrace. Seconds later Dipti jumped off.

Dipti's parents, who reside at Mumbai Central said, "My daughter's brother in-law and his wife - Bharat and Sarla - had come to her house two days ago and quarrelled with her. They said hurtful things."

Om Prakash Dubey, an eyewitness in the case, said, "I was standing a short distance from the spot where the boy and the mother landed. As soon as I heard the thud I rushed to check on the two. Both landed on their heads and died on the spot. We informed the police and rushed them to Bhagwati Hospital where both Siddhesh and Dipti were declared dead on arrival."

Dubey added that Nilesh rushed down only after people started shouting for help.

Sarita Naik, Dipti's neighbour said, "She was a very nice woman and very helpful. We do not know what led her to take such a drastic step."

Another neighbour said that the couple used to argue frequently. Apparently, the couple had an argument on Saturday morning before Dipti left the house.
