Mumbai ACB sleuths travel 500m atop car to arrest 2 BMC engineers

Officers climbed on to car as the two suspects tried to flee

In a scene straight out of a Hindi movie, two anti-corruption bureau (ACB) officers – one on the bonnet and the other on the carrier of a car — were dragged to a distance of 500m on Friday while attempting to catch two assistant engineers with the civic body accepting Rs10 lakh bribe from a developer.

The duo was arrested after an ACB vehicle following them overtook the car.

According to the ACB, the complainant is working on projects in Santacruz.

The buildings and factories department of H-ward in Bandra (West) had issued a notice to the developer based on a complaint that the construction was illegal.

The developer approached the ACB, who then verified the complaint and laid a trap.

The accused visited the developer’s office at Santacruz (West) on Friday.

“The duo had come to the developer’s office on Friday to negotiate the bribe amount. After negotiations, the accused instructed the developer to put a packet containing Rs10 lakh in their car,” said the officer.

The duo immediately accelerated the car.

“A constable and an officer, who were waiting in the vicinity, climbed on the bonnet and carrier of the car to stop them. They were dragged to around 500m before our vehicle stopped their car,” said the officer.

The searches in the car led to the recovery of an additional amount of Rs11.15 lakh.

“We will also check the source of the money found in their car.”
