The college officials found discrepancies in the photographs of 87 of the 2,500 online applicants.

“On further investigation, the college officials found that some students had very high score in the online tests, but did not seem bright during the interview and group discussion,” said Himanshu Roy, joint commissioner of police (crime).

Taking note of this, Varsha Parab, director administration, I/C registrar NMIMS, filed a complaint.

“Brajendrapratap Singh was arrested on April 26 by a team led by police inspectors Nandkishore More, Deepak Phatangare and Sunil Ghosalkar. Singh led them to the other accused who were arrested on Thursday,” officials said.

According to officials, Alok Kumar, who took the tests as a dummy candidate, had even appeared for CAT and GMAT exams. “We are checking if the accused had breached the admission process of other colleges too,” Roy said.

The three-month window period between filling of the online forms and taking the test was what helped the gang.
