Following the arrest of two juveniles in two separate cases of gangrape at Shakti Mills compound, the police have decided to keep tabs on all juvenile offenders across Mumbai.

At the crime review meeting held on Wednesday, it was decided that all police stations in the city would round up juveniles in their jurisdictions with criminal records and register details of what they are doing currently and other information.

“The intention is to get the details of what they are doing currently and determine whether they are involved in any criminal activity,” said Vinayak Deshmukh, deputy commissioner of police (zone 3).

Henceforth, these details will be updated constantly, officials said.

After two rape incidents were reported at the spot, the police have put up a banner at Shakti Mills compound warning people that the property is abandoned along with phone numbers of NM Joshi Marg police station.

As the accused in both incidents had been loitering on tracks adjoining the mill compound, the police said they would write to the railway police. “Since there is an entry to the compound from the tracks and as the route is accessed by people as a shortcut to Mahalaxmi station, we will ask the railway police to secure the spot,” said an officer.

With the festive season set to begin on Monday with Ganesh utsav, the police said they would do their best to curb crimes against women. “Police teams in plain clothes will be posted at crowded places along with regular bandobast and CCTV cameras will be installed,” Deshmukh said.
