Mumbai DGP Sarabdeep Singh Virk reitres after 39 yrs

Maharashtra state Director General of Police Sarabdeep Singh Virk retired on Saturday after serving the police force in the states of Maharashtra and Punjab for a period of 39 years, reports HT Correspondent.

Maharashtra state Director General of Police Sarabdeep Singh Virk retired on Saturday after serving the police force in the states of Maharashtra and Punjab for a period of 39 years. Virk had taken over charge in March, this year, from DG A N Roy after the Bombay High Court quashed Roy’s appointment stating that the selection process was “arbitary and violated the apex court guidelines”.

Virk, a daredevil 1970 batch Indian Police Services officer, spent most of his career in Punjab on deputation and had seen the heights of militancy in Punjab. But allegations of corruption leveled against him saw Punjab government suspend his as DGP in April 2007.

The Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) set aside his suspension in 2008, which paved the way for him to become Maharashtra’s DGP.

Virk had, once again, moved the CAT in July this year and sought a extension to his tenure as Maharashtra DGP. However, CAT refused to grant extension to Virk and directed the state government to decide on it by Saturday.

“Har Kahani Ka Anth Hota Hai”, (Every story has an end),” said Virk while addressing the media and said that his ‘innings’ has come to an end. He also said that there were fears and apprehensions whether he would be able to deliver.

“Maharashtra state government co-operated with me in every plans such as measures suggested to tackle naxalite menace, terrorism and police modernization”, he said adding that Naxal challenge will have to be given maximum considerations.
