Mumbai: Jain temple priest hangs himself near Lower Parel station

A 23-year-old priest of a Jain temple at Bhoiwada in Mumbai hanged himself below the Lower Parel rail overbridge (ROB) on Friday. The government railway police (GRP) identified the priest after finding his name and address written on his right hand.

Umesh Tiwari had been working as a priest in the temple for the past five years. According to preliminary investigations, the GRP said there was a domestic dispute with his extended family that may have led to the incident. Tiwari was unmarried and lived alone ever since his parents passed away in his childhood.

Tiwari’s body was found around 5.30pm, soon after which a team of GRP officials reached the spot. He had torn his shirt and had used a part of it to hang himself with a pole attached to the ROB, between the up and down slow lines near Lower Parel station.

“We rushed him to Nair Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. The autopsy report also confirmed there was no foul play in the incident and that he had died because of hanging. The detailed address of the temple in Gulalwadi and his name on his right hand helped us confirm his identity,” said an officer of the Mumbai Central GRP.
