While 30-year-old Sunil Shaheena Upadhay died, his cousin Prem Roshan Upadhay was injured, said the police. The jeep’s driver, Kamlesh Kamble, ran away from the spot after the accident, but later surrendered to the police.

The accident took place around 5am on the Santacruz Chembur Link Road (SCLR), opposite the Sidhpura industrial estate in Kurla, said officers from the VB Nagar police.

Kamble, a Nallasopara resident, was driving a Qualis and was alone in the vehicle at the time of the accident. He owns the car and drives people around for money, the police said. On Friday morning, he was returning to the city after dropping a family to Dapoli town in Ratnagiri.

“Kamble was driving towards Santacruz when he lost control over the vehicle. The vehicle jumped the divider and went over to the opposite lane, crashing into the footpath on which the two were sleeping,” said Sheetal Patil, sub-inspector, VB Nagar police station.

Kamble was not drunk but was exhausted as he had been driving for a long time, the police said. He may have dozed off, causing him to lose control over the car, an officer said. Preliminary investigations have revealed he had purchased the jeep from someone, but did not complete the formalities of the transfer, said the police.
