Mumbai may have to wait some more for cool weather: IMD

Mumbai will have to wait for at least two more days to get respite from the heat.

The minimum temperature at Santacruz, which had dropped to 18 degrees Celsius a few days ago, rose to 20 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature at Colaba was 23.5 degrees Celsius.

“We are not expecting any immediate drop in temperatures. The winds are still easterly and northeasterly. We are worried about the above-normal maximum temperatures. Once the winds become northerly, the city will get respite from heat. This may happen after Friday,” said VK Rajeev, director, India Meteorological Department (IMD), western region.

Generally, the maximum temperatures in the city are in the range of 30-32 degrees Celsius in December, while the minimum temperatures are in the range of 15-18 degrees Celsius.

The humidity levels, too, are unusually high this year.

On Wednesday, the humidity at Colaba was 67%, while it was 50% at Santacruz. The absence of cold northerly winds has led to high humidity levels.
