If you are having trouble filing your income tax returns online or are stressed out about a misprint on your PAN card, here's some good news. To solve these and other tax-related problems, the income tax (I-T) department has set up a dedicated helpdesk at its head office in Aaykar Bhavan, Churchgate.

The helpdesk, inaugurated last week by chief commissioner of income tax, Mumbai, NP Singh, sits in a room equipped with internet facility. The new system will enable taxpayers to access up-to-date information. I-T officials said that the system is a step up from the previous “enquiry desk”, which merely guided people to the officer or department concerned to get their problems redressed.

“Being connected with a computer, the new facility would resolve taxpayers' problems in a better way,” said a senior I-T official, who spoke to HT on the condition of anonymity.

Among the several issues the helpdesk aims to resolve is the problem of misspelt names on PAN cards. “The staff attending the helpdesk would guide people on rectifying names wrongly spelt on PAN cards,” the official said.

The newly-inaugurated helpdesk would also help resolve matters related to I-T return forms and also provide various types of information as per I-T rules.
