New pattern for commerce, arts in Jr college

Though the new term is yet to begin, with Class 11 admissions still in progress, the state board sent a circular to colleges last month informing them about the changed pattern.

The quantum of marks have been reduced from 300 to 200, with 20% of the total now being determined by college-level assessments through projects and practicals. The detailed break-up of the evaluation scheme is different for every subject.

“There will be less emphasis on learning by rote and greater opportunity for students to do well by spreading out the assessment through the year,” said Jyoti Thakur, vice-principal of Jai Hind College in Churchgate.

Last year was the first time the new scheme was introduced for science students in Class 11. The same will now be applied to Class 12 science students, with students being evaluated on 200 instead of 300 marks in total.

“If their seats are filled, colleges need not wait until then,” said a senior official of the school education department. The online process is scheduled to end on July 12. In total, 15,423 students so far have secured their seats after making it to the second merit list declared on Wednesday.
