Night temperature dips to 12.6 degrees Celsius in Mumbai, lowest in two years

Night temperatures dipped sharply in the city and both the suburbs and south Mumbai recorded below normal temperatures on Wednesday morning. At 12.6 degrees Celsius, Tuesday night recorded the lowest January temperature in the past two years.

According to India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) recordings between 5.30pm on Tuesday and 8.30am on Wednesday, the night temperature recorded at the Santacruz was 4.1 degrees Celsius below normal and at Colaba, it was almost a degree below normal.

According to the weathermen, temperatures across the state dropped to below normal levels, especially along the Konkan coast, central Maharashtra and Marathwada owing to winds being northerly.

“Cold winds from the north have intensified bringing down temperatures over the state. There is also a cold wave across eastern Uttar Pradesh and parts of Madhya Pradesh that have brought down temperatures as well”, said KS Hosalikar, deputy director general (western region), IMD.

On Wednesday, the lowest minimum temperature recorded in the state was at Nashik at 5.8 degrees Celsius, followed by Ahmednagar at 7.6 degrees Celsius and Pune at 8.2 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile, day temperatures in Mumbai also continued to be below normal levels and below 30 degrees Celsius across the city. While the suburbs recorded a temperature of 28.4 degrees Celsius, 2 degree Celsius below normal, 27.8 degrees Celsius, a temperature of 1.7 degree Celsius below normal was recorded at south Mumbai.

Moisture levels were high on Wednesday morning in the suburbs with 70% relative humidity being recorded. However, humidity levels were low at south Mumbai as only 55% relative humidity was observed.

Weathermen have predicted clear skies for the next 24 hours with day and night temperatures at 29 degrees Celsius and 14 degrees Celsius respectively.
