Surendra’s whereabouts are still unknown. In 2008, the CBI had registered a case of criminal conspiracy and cheating against the two directors of the Hirandani group in an alleged Rs 160 crore Employment Provident Fund (PF) scam.

The CBI alleged that the Hiranandani group had not deposited provident fund in the accounts of their employees in the year 2003-04.

In addition to the two directors, four PF officers and two employees were named in the first information report, which was registered on March 29, 2008.

On Wednesday, the CBI argued that Niranjan’s bail should be cancelled because he too is an accused in the case.

“The court granted him (Niranjan) protection, asked him to deposit Rs 1 lakh, and directed him not to leave the country,” said public prosecutor Ejaz Khan.
