Students who demand a reimbursement of the Rs 9,500 the school charged apart from the school fees will also not be allowed to participate in sports, school events and special days like Republic Day and Children’s Day. They will also be left out of the school band and farewell parties.

“Those parents who do not wish their child to avail of the additional facilities provided, which are not financed by the government education department, may apply for a refund,” reads a circular displayed on the school notice board.

Father Paul Julius, school manager, said they were simply following the orders issued by the school education department on May 2 to refund the extra fees collected by the school. “These fees were for various annual expenses that are not covered by the government aid. We have no problem refunding these fees to parents, but we will also stop providing these facilities,” he said.

Parents also feel that such conditions are unjustified. “The school charges exam fees separately, so how can they deny exam papers and report cards to parents seeking a refund?” said one parent, whose child is studying in the secondary section. Another parent added that such facilities are the basic responsibility of the school.
