In a decision that could spell trouble for leaders of the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) hoping for tickets for their relatives in the upcoming civic elections, district chiefs decided at a meeting on Saturday not to entertain requests from members for their kin.
This decision could be a snub to city BJP chief Raj Purohit, among others, who has been lobbying for a ticket for his daughter-in-law. The district chiefs had assembled in the city to take a stock of the selection of candidates.
This decision is likely to affect two more city BJP leaders - Parag Alvani and standing corporator Arvind Bane - both of who have been lobbying for tickets for their wives.
The meeting, held at Opposition leader Eknath Khadse's bungalow, was also attended by state BJP chief Sudhir Mungantiwar and former MPs Kirit Somaiyya and Jaywantiben Mehta.
This decision comes just days after BJP's election observers were manhandled by party activists when they visited the Vile Parle office, ostensibly to foist Alvani's wife candidature.
A source who attended the meeting, said, "This was a message directly from BJP chief Nitin Gadkari, who decided that dynasties should not be encouraged in the city BJP. Although there was no final decision on these three contentious seats, it is an indirect implication that requests from these leaders are not likely to be entertained."
