Surpiya Sule would have deposed in the witness box had there been even an iota of evidence to show that she owned property in Singapore, her counsel told the Bombay high court on Tuesday. Sule's lawyer Mohan Jaykar was responding to an application by Mrinalini Kakde, who challenged the election of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MP to the Lok Sabha in 2009.

The application was moved as part of Kakde's petition, which urged the court to declare Sule a non-Indian citizen as she had purchased property in Singapore thereby attaining citizenship of the country. This, according to Kakde, would nullify Sule's election.
Kakde had earlier urged the court to issue witness summons to Mahendran Muthusamy, the councilor officer, Singapore consulate-general in Mumbai.
Kakde had also alleged that Sule used the influence of her father, union agriculture minister Sharad Pawar, to curtail the disclosure of information sought about her assets in Singapore.
