Number of absconding accused dips by 2,404

By following the Bombay high court (HC) directive, and preparing a computerised database, the Maharashtra government has succeeded in bringing down the number of absconding accused, by 2,404, over the last three days.

Additional public prosecutor Ajay Gadkari informed the HC that the number of absconding accused has dropped from 223,081 to 21,172.

The number of persons who jumped bail, furlough, or parole, reduced drastically, as there was a duplication of over 2,000 names. Nearly 70% of those absconding, are from Mumbai. From the state figures, 14,474 are from Mumbai alone.

Commenting on this trend, justice AM Khanwilkar said, “You need to pay more attention on Mumbai and strengthen the machinery there.”

Khanwilkar also asked the police to prepare a separate plan for the city, saying, “The plan used for the rest of Maharashtra will not work in Mumbai.”

Gadkari informed the court, “Instead of constituting a special wing, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) for each region will monitor the progress of the absconding accused, with the help of some staff. These personnel will work on tracing the absconding accused on a priority basis.”

Since the cells were constituted earlier this month, 1,823 persons have been re-arrested.
