What will it take for Mumbaiites to get their domestic help registered? Going by the numbers, neither the spiraling rate of crime against senior citizens nor repeated reminders from police can get them to act. For, only 1305 people from the city have approached the police for verification of their domestic help in the last three years.
The most apathetic response has been from Ghatkopar, Pantnagar, Vile Parle, Bhandup, Kandivali , Andheri, Borivali, DN Nagar and Bandra-Kurla Complex where not even a single person has approached the police to have house-help registered.
"With the best interest of people in mind, three years ago, Mumbai police started this procedure of getting house help registered. It is a very useful process, which can save many lives and people should take advantage of it," said Himanshu Roy, joint commissioner of police (crime).
Roy added that the recent incidents of murder and robbery in the city involved domestic help, who had been hired recently without a thorough verification of their antecedents.
"In most of these cases, the domestic help had taken up work with the sole intention of committing the crime," Roy added.
According to the police, the registration procedure is simple but can end up saving your life. "A person who is providing a wrong address to his employers has wrong intentions and can be nabbed well in advance. But this is possible only if the employers choose to approach the police in time," stated Roy, ruing the fact that citizens have not taken repeated warnings by the police too seriously.
