Namdeo Chawan, deputy commissioner of police (traffic), does not think that the drives conducted by the traffic department are inadequate in dealing with offenders.

“These drives help prevent several accidents that would have taken place otherwise. The accidents that we prevent through our drives don’t show in the statistics, but the drives play an important role in maintaining road safety in the city,” said Chawan.

Through the drives, the traffic police have booked many people under section 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act, which deals with speeding or driving dangerously. “We have managed to ensure that the people driving dangerously are not allowed to go ahead,” he said.

“Our drives and nakabandis are conducted on a regular basis. While there are specific time periods such as between 11 pm and 1 am and weekends when we make a concentrated effort, it does not mean that we are not checking for errant drivers on the other days of the week,” Chawan said.
