Increasing services to Panvel from Wadala and Thane will improve connectivity with this developing transport and business hub.
The township that is getting Mumbai's second international airport is on the railway's agenda for other rail connectivity projects. The station is being converted into a major railway terminus at a cost of Rs 27 crore. The Railway Ministry had also announced a few years ago that Panvel would get the status of a junction station, which would boost train frequency and passenger amenities.
There is a Panvel-Karjat railway line and the WR started services between Panvel, Virar and Dahanu a few years ago.
"The state is promoting the development of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region to ease the pressure off Mumbai and its suburbs. The key is quicker and cheaper mobility," a railway official said.
