This unlikely event happened because the bag was found by Suresh Agare (50), who works as a peon with a private company.

Latigara, who owns a jewellery shop at Marine Lines, had taken some from jewellery his shop to send to Surat.

On May 14, Latigara closed the shop for the day, took a Borivli fast local train, and kept the bag containing the gold on the luggage rack.

Latigara, accompanied by two friends, was so engrossed in their conversation, he forgot about the bag while alighting at Borivli station, realising his mistake only when his father asked him about the bag at his house.

He then registered a case with the Borivli railway police station.

Agare, who had boarded the same train, noticed the abandoned bag while getting off at Borivli station.

Since it was already midnight, he decided to take the bag home. There, he opened it and found the gold.

On Friday, Agare went to Latigara’s house and asked if they had lost any gold jewellery. When Latigara’s family said they had, Agare took Latigara to the Borivli railway police and returned the bag.

PM Karyakarte, senior police inspector at the Borivli police station said the bag contained 27 gold necklaces weighing 1,400 gm. Latigara rewarded Agare with Rs 51,000 in cash.
