Pereira surrenders before court, cops send him home

Four days after the Supreme Court upheld his conviction in a 2006 hit-and-run case, Alistair Pereira surrendered before the Sewree sessions court on Monday. He was, however, allowed to go home as the copy of the Supreme Court’s order is yet to be received.

Pereira had mowed down six persons who were sleeping on a pavement in Bandra and had injured seven others in November 2006.

Clad in a black shirt and denim blue jeans, Pereira reached Khar police station around 10am following which a police team escorted him to the court.

To avoid interaction with the media, Pereira was whisked away in a police vehicle. He was first taken to Sewree court and then to the special branch-unit 1 office in CST.

From there the vehicle headed to Kala Ghoda and entered a one-way road next to the Bombay high court. The vehicle then took the Bandra-Worli sea link to go to the Khar police station from where he went back to his house in Silver Dee building on Carter Road. None of his family members or relatives were willing to talk.

The police said Pereira would be informed once the court order was received and he would have to surrender before the court.

On January 12, the Supreme Court had rejected Pereira’s bail application and had upheld the three-year jail term awarded to him by the Bombay high court. The bench of justice RM. Lodha and justice JS Kehar cancelled the bail bond of Pereira and directed him to surrender.
