Protesting against alleged police inaction, relatives of Elilala Shankar Emubali, a 24-year-old college student who died on Tuesday after sustaining injuries during a brawl, staged a rasta roko at Malad on Wednesday.

More than 2,000 people had gathered near the Link Road, bringing the traffic to a halt from 4pm to 6pm, said eyewitnesses. At 11.30pm on August 10, Emubali, a resident of Kachpada area in Malad had an argument with David Anthony Kondur, 29, over a petty issue. Kondur, a BMC employee, allegedly beat up Emubali, leading to serious injuries. The 24-year-old was first admitted to the KEM hospital and was transferred to Riddhi Siddhi hospital in Malad on Sunday.

Lingam Singarvelu, Emubali's cousin, said that though the police had recorded Emubali's statement on August 11, they did not register an FIR.

"We had registered a case of assault against Kondur on August 10. He was arrested on Monday as he was on the run," said Avinash Jadhav, senior inspector of Malad police station.

"After Emubali's death, Kondur has been charged for murder. He will be produced before a metropolitan court on Thursday," added Jadhav.

Refuting the claims, Singarvelu said, "A case was filed only after Emubali's mother confronted the police on August 18."
