Police in the dark about Malad ACP’s son’s suicide

On Friday, at 2 am, Abhijeet Kurne (27), son of Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Madhusudhan Kurne, shot his wife Ashwini (21) on her temple from a point blank range and after two hours shot himself on the head using his father’s revolver.

None of the family members reportedly heard the gunshots. Their bodies were discovered only at 8.30 am and then the police was informed.

The Malad police are in the process of recording the statements of the family members, relatives and friends of the couple.

Abhijeet was the eldest son of Kurne, who is attached to the Protection and Security branch of Mumbai police.

The police will also be checking the phone records of Abhijeet and Ashwini to verify whom they had spoken to prior to the incident.

“Only after taking everybody’s statement, will we be able to arrive at any conclusion,” said Police Inspector Deepak Phatangare of Malad police station.

Kurne lived with his wife, Abhijeet, Ashwini and his second son Amar in a two BHK flat on the third floor of Royal Apartments in Rajanpada, near Mittal College in Malad (West). Kurne’s youngest son Aniket is pursuing education in Kolhapur, the police said.
