Police informer held for kidnap bid

Kamlesh Sharma (41), the man arrested for attempting to kidnap two minor girls with the intention of raping them, turned out to be a police informer, who had helped solve many cases.

Sharma was caught by a mob in Buddha colony at Kurla on June 23 and handed over to VB Nagar police station. The locals alleged that Sharma was seen luring two minor school-going girls from the area with money. Sharma reportedly asked the girls to accompany him to his home.

It was then that one of the girls raised an alarm and he was held and thrashed by the mob.

The police have so far not established his involvement in the three cases of rape and murder of minor girls, at Nehru Nagar.

Police sources said Sharma, who is an auto rickshaw driver, has been staying in the Guru Dutt area of Kurla since 20 years. From his late 20s, he has reportedly been a police informer and helped the police solve many petty crime cases.

The investigators suspect that Sharma could have been the victim of someone's jealousy, as was close to the police department. Another reason possible for his arrest according to the investigators is that Sharma could be a victim of 'over-alertness' among the public after the recent cases in Nehru Nagar.
