Sources in the home department revealed that the go-ahead was given over the weekend for appointment of the expert, a chartered accountant, on a request made by the special team formed by Mumbai police commissioner to investigate into the disproportionate assets case against Singh.

The police often take help from private experts and agencies to investigate technical and financial aspects of cases when required. Technical experts' opinions are accepted by the courts and they can be examined during the trial if necessary.

It may be recalled that the high court had directed the police commissioner to submit a report on the findings of the investigation during the hearing on April 19.

Meanwhile, sources disclosed that some of the 19 properties mentioned as having been owned by Singh and his family members in the public interest litigation filed by activist Sanjay Tiwari, have been disposed of. One such property is a flat in Kingston building at Powai, which had been allotted to Singh under the chief minister's quota. When Singh reportedly surrendered the flat, it was allotted to his daughter and son-in-law, who later sold it.
