The Mumbai crime branch is now likely to employ the services of a ‘forensic molecular photo fitter’ in order to recreate the facial features of the skull that they had found from the Kumbharli ghat in Chiplun after the spot was pointed out to them by multiple murder accused Vijay Palande.

Joint commissioner of police (crime) Himanshu Roy said they would try to recreate the person’s face so that they could solve the case. He said they would also be checking the missing complaints filed in the city to match the features. Roy said they would soon be arresting Palande and accused Dhananjay Shinde in the case as the skull was recovered at their instance from Chiplun on April 16 this year. “Interrogating them could throw more light on the case,” said another officer.
The police had found the skull at some distance from the torso that matched that of aspiring producer Karankumar Kakkad. However, the DNA of the skull found did not match with Kakkad’s.
Even the plastic bag in which the skull was wrapped was different to that in which the torso had been found, officers said, adding prima facie that it appeared that the skull was thrown sometime before the torso as it had rotted a little more. Police, after this, registered a third case against Palande and Shinde at the Oshiwara police station.
Officers said these experts were from Mumbai and the police had earlier used similar experts for the 7/11 serial blasts in the Mumbai suburban trains.
