Mumbai's pothole-ridden roads claimed another casualty on Monday evening when a 55-year-old man biker lost his balance after his bike hit a pothole, and was run over by speeding tanker at Wadala.

The incident took place around 5.30pm at the Barkat Ali Dargah Marg in Wadala East. The deceased, Mohammad Afzal Mohammad Ayub, was riding towards his Madanpura residence on his Honda Activa, and failed to spot a crater on the road. According to NS Jadhav, senior inspector of Wadala police station, "He saw the pothole at the last moment and hit the brakes. However, the bike skidded on the wet road and Ayub was crushed under the tanker that was passing by." Locals rushed Ayub - who sustained severe head injuries - to the KEM hospital where he was declared dead. The biker worked at a zari unit and is survived by a wife and two sons.
The driver of the tanker left his vehicle and fled from the spot. Assistant police inspector S More said, "We have registered a case against the driver for causing death due to negligence. We have the registration number of the tanker and we will be able to catch him soon, he added." Senior inspector Jadhav said that the road where the accident took place was in poor condition.
