Power supply to western India to improve next year

A 150-km, 400 kilovolt double-circuit Parali-Solapur transmission line — part of the Western Regional System Strengthening (WRSS) project, — has become operational. The line was built by Reliance Infrastructure Limited, as the country’s first 100% privately owned transmission project, on a Build, Own and Operate basis.

The WRSS project, once completed, would comprise a 1,500-km line and would facilitate the flow of 4,000 megawatt of power from the eastern region.

“This would immediately help relieve grid congestion, which presently the entire western region, which include Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Goa, is facing” said a source from RInfra, requesting anonymity.

Construction of transmission lines in other states is nearing completion, and the lines will be interconnected by next year. Rinfra’s subsidiary, Reliance Power Transmission Ltd. (RPTL) has already commissioned the first three transmission lines of the project: Solapur – Karad, Limdi – Ranchodpura and Lonikand – Kalwa.

All the transmission lines have been commissioned in record time, well before schedule. The company is expected to commission the entire project by end of 2012.

RInfra CEO Lalit Jalan told the Hindustan Times “The successful commissioning of the project before scheduled time reflects inherent strengths of the company in executing projects.”
