‘Premature release of 1993 blasts convicts unacceptable’

The Bombay High Court on Tuesday observed that the state home department’s order to put 1993 blasts convicts behind bars for 60 years is not acceptable.

The observation came while the court was hearing four petitions filed by 1993 serial blasts convicts, who are facing up to 60 years’ imprisonment or till they attain the age of 65 as per government’s latest norms.

On August 4, the government passed the order stating that the convicts would be entitle to premature release only after they spend 60 years behind bars or till they turn 65.

The HC has asked advocate general Ravi Kadam to be present in court on Wednesday and assist in the case.

The petitions have been filed by Salim Mira Shaikh, Niyaz Shaikh, Shaikh Ali, and Moin Qureshi who are seeking premature release as they have already spent 14 years in prison.
