Pvt bodies to collect dry waste

Civic body contemplates tie-ups with organisations to collect, recycle dry waste from city households. Kunal Purohit reports.

After looking for a technology to process both dry and wet waste, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) now plans to bring in a separate system to collect dry waste.

The proposal is in sharp contrast to the BMC's stand on the failure of the segregation movement. In its November 29 edition, Hindustan Times had reported that the civic body was planning to look at technologies which would process both dry and wet waste, as most people refused to segregate garbage.

However, as part of the new plan, the BMC is contemplating tie-ups with organisations that collect waste and recycle it.

"We could divide the city into different zones. The organisations could directly collect the dry waste from societies. With no share for the BMC, they could benefit commercially from it," said additional municipal commissioner Mohan Adtani.

The idea will be put forth to the technical advisory committee, said Adtani.

The independent committee, comprising experts on waste management and legal advisors, was constituted last month to come up with suggestions for waste collection and garbage disposal.

"We will send the proposal for such a system to the committee. If they find the idea feasible, we will start its implementation," said Adtani.
