After nearly two years, the authorities seem to have realised the need to complete work on the foot overbridge (FOB) at Goregaon’s Jawahar Nagar rail crossing.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Western Railway (WR) had locked horns over the funding that was required to complete this FOB. The funding was estimated to be Rs 35 lakh.

The local Member of Legislature Assembly and senior Shiv Sena leader Subhash Desai has now directed the BMC to fund the construction.

Work on the bridge had been abruptly halted when neither the BMC nor the WR was willing to disburse funds to the agency contracted for its construction.

“Ninety per cent of the total accidents at Goregaon station happen at the Jawahar Nagar crossing,” said Rajesh Gangar, president of We The People, a non-profit organisation, which has initiated an anti-trespassing drive at Goregaon station.

Between January and November this year, there have been 111 accidents at Goregaon and another one in December.

“I have directed the BMC to release Rs 35 lakh for this FOB by next week,” said Subhash Desai, MLA, Goregaon and senior Shiv Sena leader. “Once it happens, work can be completed in three or four months.”

This FOB is situated between Jogeshwari and Goregaon stations where extension work on the Harbour line route is also being carried out.

“We will begin the process of transferring funds required by WR in the coming days,” said S. Joshi, chief engineer (Roads), BMC. “Work on the FOB had been stalled for more than 18 months and the cost has escalated.”

Divisional Railway Manager of WR, C.P. Sharma, had promised to expedite work on the FOB once matters were sorted out.
